Chambord needs you: Save the François I Wing

The François I Wing is in danger.

Chambord, a UNESCO World Heritage jewel, fused Italian Renaissance esthetics with the art of building that was inherited from France’s medieval royal châteaux. Today, the monument is under threat, as the weakening of the François I wing — which is entirely closed to the public — is progressing insidiously, with cracks, unstable foundations, and roof deterioration.

A major campaign to restore the François I Wing now needs to be conducted in short order. Under the supervision of Maël de Quelen, Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, the restoration work will begin in early 2026 and continue until 2030. The work will focus on consolidating the masonry, restoring the sculptures, and repairing the timber frames using period techniques. In a later phase, the museography and scenography will be redesigned.

€37 million are needed to restore the royal wing. Given the scale of this challenge, the commitment of the French State — the owner — and of the Domaine national de Chambord is absolutely essential. However, their support alone cannot guarantee the rescue of the wing. To fund this vital project, Chambord is seeking patrons to follow in the footsteps of Francis I, the great defender of the arts and letters.

Together, let’s ensure the rebirth of the François I wing and pass it on to future generations. Become a guardian of Chambord’s heritage!

The Eponymous Wing of François I in Peril

Built between 1539 and 1545 on the marshiest part of the site, this wing of the château houses François I’s private apartments and his council chamber. Its deterioration, a phenomenon known and documented for over two decades, has accelerated in recent years.

As early as the 2000s, the first signs of damage were observed, and since 2023, nearly the entire wing has been closed to the public. This summer, new cracks appeared on the Robert de Parme Tower, adjacent to the François I wing, showing that the structural tensions are spreading throughout the building.

Studies conducted since 2022 demonstrate that these issues originate from the château’s various construction phases and have been worsened by climate disruptions in recent years. Flooding and periods of severe drought have caused instability in certain floors as well as structural damage.

This situation highlights the close interconnection between the château and its surrounding estate. Preserving the ecosystems, particularly the natural water network (forest ponds, streams, etc.), is therefore a key challenge at Chambord for safeguarding the built heritage.

A €37 Million Project for the Future

Under the direction of Maël de Quelen, Chief Architect of Historic Monuments, this major project will begin in 2026 with safety and emergency works. At the same time, a complete restoration of the wing will be carried out: consolidation of the masonry, restoration of Renaissance sculptures, and reconstruction of the timber framework using period techniques. In a second phase, the museography and scenography will be entirely redesigned.

By 2032, the public will once again be able to admire and visit the François I wing through a reimagined route, highlighting the life and reign of the commissioning king as well as the key figures of the Renaissance. The wing will also include a space dedicated to debates and discussions on “new renaissances” in response to the challenges of the 21st century. An auditorium will complete the development, hosting thinkers, scientists, economic actors, artists, and musicians for conferences, symposiums, and concerts.

This project is part of the Master Plan for Restoration and Development (SDRA), currently being drafted, which will allow for the ten-year planning of priority works across the entire estate:

– the château,
– the Marshal de Saxe stables,
– the surrounding areas,
– the forest estate.
