L’œuvre représente Louis XVIII, en grand costume, se tenant debout devant le trône royal, arborant les colliers de l’Ordre du Saint Esprit et de l’Ordre de la Jarretière, qui révèlent la dimension militaire de sa charge. De la main droite, il tient le sceptre royal et, dans la main gauche, la Charte constitutionnelle octroyée au peuple français le 4 juin 1814. Le roi indique par là qu’il se considère comme un homme soumis aux lois et non plus comme un monarque de droit divin.
This work shows Louis XVIII in full regalia, standing in front of the royal throne, wearing the collars of the Order of the Holy Spirit, and the Order of the Garter to indicate the military aspect of his function. In his right hand he holds the royal sceptre and in his left the Constitutional Charter granted to the French people on 4th June 1814. In this way, the king shows that he sees himself as a man subject to the rule of law and no longer as a monarch with divine rights.
Das Werk zeigt Ludwig XVIII. im großen Gewand vor dem königlichen Thron stehend. Er trägt die Ketten des Ordens vom Heiligen Geist und des Hosenbandordens, die das militärische Ausmaß seines Amtes aufzeigen. In der rechten Hand hält er das königliche Zepter und in der linken die „Charte constitutionnelle“, die neue französische Verfassung, die am 4. Juni 1814 erlassen wurde. Der König zeigt damit, dass er sich als Mann ansieht, der den Gesetzen unterliegt und nicht mehr als Monarch mit göttlichem Recht.
