Water carries with it the very quality of our environment. By counting and qualifying the little animals that live on a river’s bed, we can assess the quality of its waters. With the help of the workshop leaders, pupils carry out a survey of the River Cosson in search of its biotic index.
A simplified approach to determining the biological quality of a watercourse.
Programme
- Pupils split into groups and scour the riverbed, collecting the little animals carried along by the water or clinging to the bottom.
- Once back indoors, pupils use magnifying glasses to help them draw up a qualitative inventory of species and numbers of individuals per species, then calculate the river’s biotic index with the aid of a simplified table.
