En 1626, il offre en apanage le comté de Blois, dont dépend Chambord, à son frère, Gaston d’Orléans, qui y est assigné à résidence en 1634.
This full-length portrait of Louis XIII shows the king dressed in a full suit of armour, wearing the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a white scarf denoting him as head of the armies, and holding the commander’s baton. The painting is a pendant to the portrait of his wife, Anne of Austria, featured with the Dauphin. Louis XIII stayed at Chambord for short periods of time in 1614 and 1616. In 1626, the county of Blois, which included Chambord, was given in appanage to his younger brother Gaston d’Orléans, who was subsequently placed there under house arrest in 1634.
