500 years – 2019

In 2019 the half millennium of the beginning of construction, in 1519, of one of the most emblematic monuments in France will be an occasion for celebration.

In September 1519 began building of what was to become, at the urging of François I, the most astounding construction of the French Renaissance : the château of Chambord. Five hundred years later, the National Estate of Chambord is planning to celebrate the anniversary by organizing numerous festivities including an exhibition that will be at once retrospective and prospective, connecting the past with the future under the auspices of utopia.

In the image of the double helix staircase, sublime metaphor of perpetual renewal, the challenge posed on the eve of the 500th anniversary of Chambord is to convey to a wide-ranging public the breathtaking beauty and deep-seated singularity of a monument indissociably conjoined with its estate.

2019 will also mark the 500th  anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise and the birth of Catherine de’ Medici. The half millennium of the Renaissance in Val de Loire will likewise be celebrated under the aegis of the Centre-Val de Loire region with Stéphane Bern as sponsor and ambassador.
