The Grounds
The grounds of the Chambord Estate surround the château, like a great casket containing a single priceless jewel, and are in themselves a treasure house of France’s natural heritage. For centuries, the 5,540 hectares of oak groves, pine woods, heathland, marshland and clearings have been managed in line with the estate’s original purpose – hunting. Nowadays, that primary concern combines with organisation of amenities for the visiting public and a continuous focus on landscape quality. The entire estate is managed with sustainable development firmly in mind, and is home to a whole range of animal and vegetable species that form part of our national heritage.
An area of over 1000 hectares is equipped for visits by the public at large, with cycle paths, walking and mountain-bike tracks and riding trails, along with observatories that are open to all comers, to help them make the utmost of the flora and fauna conserved on the estate. Whenever they wish, visitors can wander in this open area and experience the silence and abundance of the Chambord Reserve.
Depending upon our foresters’ availability, visits to the National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve are organised all year round by bike, on horseback or by four-wheel drive. So don’t hold back – stay a little longer at Chambord and discover its natural side. It may be less well known, but it’s just as fascinating as visiting the Château.
