Chambord

Already listed as a World Heritage cultural site in 1981 (the Chambord Estate and its château are most certainly an “eminent example of a type of construction or architectural, technological or landscape ensemble illustrative of one or more significant periods in human history”), the Chambord estate is now listed as part of the Val de Loire site, specifically the “Val de Loire between Sully and Chalonnes” area thereof.

Val de Loire

Val de Loire’s inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 is a sign of international recognition, rewarding the work done in the Loire Basin, since 1994 in particular, with implementation of the first “Loire Grandeur Nature” plan.

The listed area comprises:
  • 2 regions (Centre, Pays de la Loire),
  • 4 départements (Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire and Maine-et-Loire),
  • 6 urban areas (Orléans, Blois, Tours, Chinon, Saumur and Angers),
  • 11 pays,
  • 1 regional natural park (PNR Loire-Anjou-Touraine),
  • 160 municipalities
and has a population of over one million.

Val de Loire UNESCO

Val de Loire is listed as a living, developing cultural landscape, meeting 3 of the 10 criteria defined by UNESCO:

  • Representing a masterpiece of human creative genius
  • Testifying to a considerable exchange of influences, over a given period or in a given cultural area, on the development of architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or creation of landscapes
  • Offering an eminent example of a type of construction or architectural, technological or landscape ensemble illustrative of one or more significant periods in human history

Val de Loire is an outstanding cultural landscape running alongside a great river, bearing witness to the harmonious development of interaction between mankind and his environment over two thousand years of history. The area, and above all its many cultural monuments, also illustrate to an extraordinary degree the influence that Renaissance and Enlightenment ideals had on Western European ideas and artistic creation. Val de Loire is remarkable for the quality of its architectural heritage, for such historic towns as Blois, Chinon, Orleans, Saumur and Tours, and especially for its world famous châteaux – the “Loire châteaux”, of which Chambord is such an outstanding example. Bear in mind that Chambord had already been included in the World Heritage list in 1981 for this very reason.
