Exhibitions

The National Estate of Chambord would like to continue an initiative of quality cultural exhibitions to learn or find out more about a Château that is able to address innovative themes in a wide array of atmospheres for all sorts of visitors, often without specialist knowledge.
For the last ten years or so, the purpose of exhibitions has been as follows:
  • to shed light on the monument’s history (historical exhibitions like My rêveries: Marshal de Saxe at Chambord; From Italy to Chambord, François I and the calvacade of French princes; Made in Chambord)
  • to present its collections (Warps and wonders; Opera Enchantments; Scipio & Hannibal the King's tapestries, the Artemisia Hangings).
Chambord occasionally hosts or puts on events in line with the French Culture Ministry’s cultural policy (Image au Centre; Hunting nature: contemporary art exhibition for the “Les visiteurs” initiative).

The frequency with which Chambord presents tapestries reflects its ambition to become one of the leading tapestry exhibitors in France. This is a major form of art that is not sufficiently promoted, and often comprises large formats. With its spacious rooms, what better monument than Chambord to display such large-size hangings in all their glory? By adorning its walls with such tapestries, Chambord is also faithfully depicting this Château’s furnishings which have commonly featured hangings through the ages.
Accordingly, true to its roots, the Château is once again decked out in the apparel that it knew back in its heyday, thereby presenting pieces that are inextricably linked with the architecture of the site.
With close to 800,000 visitors a year, most of whom are not regular museum-goers, Chambord fulfils its artistic education mission for as many people as possible.
